It has been a busy month for the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station as we’re nearing the end of the year. The team are welcoming the warm weather as they continue with their hard mahi before the holiday season.

In our news this month, work is beaming along the North Auckland Line (NAL). In the east, crews are progressing well with construction of utilities and bringing up the road level to meet the new Normanby Road Bridge, which is still aiming to be opened to the public on 22nd December. Along the tracks for the Western Line, track building has commenced, which will be ongoing up until Christmas.

Structures taking shape on main site

The future Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station and the underground City Rail Link (CRL) platform.

Buildings are taking shape on our main site, which is exciting to see, as it gives an idea of what the finalised station and surrounding areas will look like.

Showcasing beautiful concrete panels designed by local artist Graeme Tipene, our ventilation building’s design and function represent “Te Ha,” or the breath, of not only the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station, but for the entire City Rail Link (CRL) network. Over the last month, we’ve prepped and poured the concrete floor slab of level three, and by Christmas, we’ll have the final level of the concrete panels installed.

Our teams have been enjoying views of the Maunga from our station building, and we’re looking forward to sharing these with our community when the station opens. Over the last month, we’ve landed the precast concrete panels for level one of the stations’ back-of-house area, and panels and structural steel for the ground level of the stations’ front-of-house area. By Christmas, we're aiming to have finished the floor slab for level one of the front-of-house area, and have the back-of-house structural steel in.

Upcoming Blocks of Line in December

Construction activities on the NAL platform taking place next to the live rail line.

There will be a number of Blocks of Line (BOL) and upcoming night work taking place in the rail corridor in the lead-up to Christmas. BOL’s will be taking place this weekend (2nd – 5th December), as well as from the 16th – 19th December. In addition, our larger Christmas BOL will be from 26th December 2022 to 16th January 2023.

We are undertaking work outside of our normal hours, including night work and weekends, for essential activities taking place over, on, or near the live train lines, when limited or no trains are running.

During this period, crews will complete the new track for the second Western Line, and complete essential civils work near the live train lines. This work will include a tamper machine, construction of overhead lines, deliveries for track building equipment, installation of safety screens, and hoarding removals. These works will involve noise, lights, and people operating in the rail corridor during day and night.

We encourage our neighbours to reach out to our community team to discuss support options for your wellbeing during these times.

Uplifting progress on Porters Bridge (that will elevate your spirits!)

Porters Avenue Bridge is nearly set to open, and we cannot wait! The final piece of work is to install elevators on both ends of the bridge. These are currently being mechanically and electrically fitted, which is taking place over November and December.

Getting to this stage of the project didn’t happen overnight though. The team has worked tirelessly over the last year, lifting and shifting the pieces of the bridge, as they were bolted together like a jigsaw puzzle. So much so, that the bridge can be disassembled and moved to another location if needed, talk about sustainability!

Designed by local artist Tessa Harris, in collaboration with Jasmax architects, the bridge is now starting to look the part. The stair panels are in place, and feature the triangle shapes representing the 48 mountains in Auckland. The lift shafts show architecturally-designed glass panels of the elevator, representing the Maunga and the history of the Maungawhau area, including the local basalt and the tools which were used here.

The nearly completed elevators are designed to take 2.8 tonnes, or 28 people at one time! This leaves enough space for people to be able to get up and over the bridge, including those with wheelchairs, bikes, or prams, making for a truly accessible new route.

We will keep you updated as the work progresses, and will invite you to join our celebrations once the full bridge opening is confirmed. It’s only up from here once the elevators are installed and running…see you at the top!

On track! Towards the second line running for the Western Line

There was a big milestone for the project this month, as we started building the second track for the Western Line. The Western Line has had just a single line running since July 2020, when the Mount Eden Station was closed to make room to build the CRL project. The work includes a new platform and two new lines for the Western Line, a new station, and train lines that break off from the Western Line and connect to the new CRL tunnels, toward Waitemāta Station (Britomart).

The second Western Line was successfully completed by our Civils teams, and handed over to our Systems team. The team have had a busy year, creating a strong base for the trains to run on, including drainage, walls, and excavating the final track alignment. Their hard mahi has paid off, as you can see from the stretch of track-base running from the east to the west, and past the new Western Line platform.

Our Systems team is responsible for putting the train line in to this space, and boy, are they making tracks! They have hit the ground running, with the ballast and tracks already in place. Building the track is a fast-paced activity, with the work going up until approximately Christmas. Some work needs to happen overnight, including activities near the live train line, or which use the train line for delivery or ballast, equipment, or machinery.

Once the tracks are built, there is also the electrical fitout, signalling works, and other work that needs to happen on the second line running after the Easter Block of Line, next year. This is a great win for our teams, and a sign we are tracking well!

Jargon Buster: Hi-Railer

Each month we share technical terms from our construction, and ‘translate’ them into easy-to-understand language. This month we will look at ‘Hi-Railer’.

Continuing our theme of track building, Hi-Railers are machines are dual-mode vehicles, meaning they can operate on both railroad tracks and roads. This versatile machine does pretty much anything. The Hi-railer digger can do anything that a digger does, but can run on the rail line – and is used for almost every activity during track building.

The digger sits on adjusted flanged wheels, which are just like train wheels, and allows the digger to run along the train tracks without causing damage. The end of the digger can hold various attachments for digging or picking up rails, sleepers, or other track related equipment, making it a very busy machine indeed, and very handy when it comes building tracks!

Info Hub and perimeter tour

On Tuesday, 6th December from 5-7pm, we welcome you to join us at 1 New North Road in the CRL Visitor Centre at Te Manawa. We're celebrating our progress this year, and will share a look into the upcoming Christmas Block of Line, with a very special Info Hub.

We’ll provide specific information for neighbours going into the Christmas BOL, including upcoming construction activities, and and how our neighbours can reach out to us for support.

There will also be a special appearance from the Elf and Safety Manager, games and activities for our tamariki, and a chance to engage with the Communications and Engagement team at Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station.

There continues to be a buzz of activity across the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station. In our news this month, the team at Maungawhau/Mount Eden are disassembling the final gantry of the Dame Whina Cooper Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Once disassembled and loaded onto containers, it will ship to the port where it will make its final trip back to Germany.

Along the North Auckland Line, in the east crews are fully into utilities work and road regrading on Normanby and Boston Roads, in advance of the opening of the Normanby Bridge to vehicles this year. Moving westbound to the Western Line platform, the systems team has taken over the second completed line for track building. A little further along in the west, preparations are underway for the Porters Avenue Bridge lift installations, along with ongoing landscape and street works on Porters Avenue and Fenton Street.

What's happening in our tunnels?

Since the TBM’s breakthrough at Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) in September, it has continued to be a busy month for our teams working in the City Rail Link (CRL) and the Eastern Link tunnels.

The Dame Whina Cooper TBM has been pulled back through the second CRL tunnel to Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station where the team are currently disassembling the final gantry of the machine. Key pieces of the TBM are already on route back to the manufacturers in Germany, where they will be reused to build new machines.

In the first CRL tunnel, our mined tunnelling team have finished all waterproof lining and formwork and they are close to completing concreting works this week. Once done, the team will undertake the same set of works in the second CRL tunnel until mid 2023.

Work is progressing well for our two Eastern Link tunnels that will connect the new underground CRL lines to the existing Western Line (or North Auckland Line).

Civil construction for the first Eastern Link tunnel is near completion, with the team focusing on the last concrete pours for the walls and roof. Once this work is done, the tunnel will be handed over to the systems team in December to commence track work over the Block of Line.

The second Eastern Link tunnel will follow suit early next year once the reinforcement steel has been installed and concrete pouring is completed.

Urban Realm 'Elements'

Last month we shared how CRL building designs reflect the Māori creation story of Ranginui (the sky father) and Papatūānuku (the earth mother) and we talked about the waterwall that forms part of the threshold element. This month, we find out more about the threshold element - the physical point between the outside landscape, and inside the station.

The CRL design team has worked with artist Tessa Harris to design the threshold element and waterwall, and Graham Tīpene for the texture design on the ventilation building. Within the station concourse is the waterwall, a large carved basalt art piece representing volcanic flows that formed Maungawhau.

The artwork references the narrative of Matāoho and is a three-dimensional language that integrates water, basalt, glass, and concrete. The main triangle form is constructed from local basalt triangles, these are designed and spaced so the water will create interesting patterns as it flows through.

On the ceiling, Tessa developed the narrative to create a three-dimensional language that integrates the niho taniwha pattern. Constructed from powder coated aluminium the surface of the ceiling of the threshold element is constructed from rectangular, repeating modules and is highly perforated and patterned.

The Māori Creation Story is represented in the architectural treatment of the primary station entrance designs, public realm, interior station linings and secondary station components. This is expressed through the four architectural linewide elements; earth element representing Papa-tu-a-nuku, mother earth, sky element representing Rangi-nui, father sky, threshold element representing each station’s deity, and fourth element representing Te Whai-ahhh, the glimmer of dawn. Next month we’ll talk more about the fourth element.

These streets were made for walking!

The first of the urban realm work has begun at Maungawhau/Mount Eden. Fenton Street and Porters Avenue are moving into the next exciting phase of construction – streetscapes. Streetscaping is one of the final aspects of the construction in the Fenton/Porters area, this urban realm work will result in the finished streets the public will be walking on to get to the station.

This area of the site is the first area of the CRL project to start streetscapes, which includes road resurfacing, drainage, tree pits, street lighting, footpaths, and across property accessways (where they intersect the footpath).

The road surface in Fenton Street and the rock garden features, use basalt boulders and basalt pavers that are made from the excavated basalt rock, taken from the construction site, only meters away from where they will be used in the permanent street works. With the Porters Avenue Bridge aiming for a full opening before the end of the year, and the Fenton Street Bridge install targeted for the Christmas Block of Line, the area will take its final shape over the next few months. The street work will be done first and landscaping, such as the planting of trees and creation of the rock garden, will come at a later date as one of the last tasks before opening the new station.

Fenton Street will be the most changed from its previous layout with the street becoming a shared space for foot traffic, bikes and vehicles. When the station is complete, there will be an increase in foot traffic in the area. The streets are designed to support the new use of this space. So, you can say that these streets truly are made for walking!

Normanby Bridge

Normanby Bridge construction has had a mixed bag over the past month, with the end of November opening date of the bridge to vehicles being pushed out. On the other hand, the bridge panels installed are spectacular.

As our construction crews are digging, the reality of the ancient infrastructure has been increasing the scope of work. Old piping thought to be intact is leaking, and infrastructure is being found in locations near to, but not at, expected locations.

The age of this infrastructure reflects a part of town with a vibrant history, rich in stories and architecture, and proving a challenge underground. Despite the issues and challenges, teams have been working solidly, and from time to time through nights or weekends, to stay to programme. Despite these best efforts, the Normanby Bridge opening is delayed until 21 December 2022.

As well as being structurally and architecturally significant (and challenging), this area is also culturally important. Waiohua iwi/hapū explain the significance of Maungawhau and the surrounding area as the stronghold of the original paramount chiefs and progenitors of Waiohua. This area is of particular significance to mana whenua today who descend from the ancestors who once lived on the maunga and surrounding area.

Normanby Bridge Māori significance

Mana whenua record Maungawhau as an important wāhi tapu, with areas on its slopes being reserved for important ceremonial events. The main crater of Maungawhau is known as Te Ipu a Matāoho (the food bowl of Matāoho), the giant deity and creator of volcano around Tāmaki Makaurau. It is a tapu place where Matāoho came to rest and engage in ceremony.

For mana whenua, the spiritual significance of Maungawhau is not limited to its summit, but includes its slopes and base, and the basaltic caverns, caves, and water springs below ground. The surrounding swamps were important resources, while the water springs supplied the Maungawhau pā and surrounding settlements.

Conceptually, Normanby Bridge’s location can be likened to the flow of Matāoho’s volcanic solid state. Wedged in between an existing juxtaposition of residential and industrial buildings, the bridge is anchored from the ground, as if it erupted out of the soil itself. This narrative provides an overarching link to the Normanby Road Bridge that looks at the change of state of the lava flow of Matāoho to form basalt, a fine-grained, dark charcoal-black stone that occurs when hot lava flow meets the earth’s surface or a mid-ocean ridge and is cooled.

The deity of Matāoho becomes the protagonist of the Maungawhau precinct. The new Maungawhau station at the centre is the living source flowing out and connecting the dynamic fluid structure of Fenton Street Bridge, and on to Porters Avenue Bridge on the west and Mt Eden Road and Normanby Road on the east.

The Normanby Road Bridge, bridges the rail lines and connects community on foot or vehicle above. The metaphorical flow of Matāoho occurs in the physical as the bridge creates a dual spatial and physical threshold that sees the constant ebb and flow underneath, of commuters on the train.

Uptown Business Association visits Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station site.

The Uptown Committee recently had the opportunity to visit the CRL site, to witness the progress being made on the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station. It was a pleasure to share progress with the Uptown Business Association Committee. Their support and partnership throughout the project has helped us to support best outcomes for the business community. They are valued advisors of community impacts and mitigations.

Travel through time - Grafton Station platform history

From the time St Peter’s College (SPC) opened in 1939, many students came from the western suburbs of Auckland, using the train service to attend school. Until 1964, the nearest platform was Mount Eden station, a ten-minute walk to the school. At this time, about 250 SPC students were using the train and walking between Mount Eden station and the school.

A teacher from SPC, Brother T. A. Monagle, approached the New Zealand Railways Department to request a train station outside the school. The college had several reasons for asking for a station, including vehicle traffic which had increased in the area, and to prevent accidents when the students were boarding the train. The Minister of Railways at the time, Mr John McAlpine, came to see for himself and walked to Mount Eden station from the school. The visit was a success!

Boston Road railway station was built near SPC on the Western Line of the Auckland rail network, beneath the State Highway 1 overbridge. The first train stopped at this new station at 8.30am on Tuesday 15 September 1964.

The station closed on 10 April 2010, the day after the opening of the new Grafton Station, built to better serve a more central area including the hospital and local university. Thanks to Brother T. A. Monagle, SPC students continue to have direct access to the train station for their daily commute.

Community Manager's restaurant review - Wok'n Noodle

Check out Lee and his exciting area of Uptown.

Come on into Wok'n Noodle! – I hear this crazy compelling voice from outside of the restaurant and it’s awesome. From the second I hear the words and see the smile of owner and entrepreneur Lee Chang Woo, I’m glad I came. I am transported to a homely place where they are delighted to see me, like I’m an old friend. The ambiance is warm and welcoming.

The food speaks for itself – a range of healthy curries, delights for carnivores and vegetarians alike, dish upon dish of fragrant fusion at its best. Apart from the amazing selection of food and the sumptuous flavours, what sets Wok'n Noodle apart is the man behind the Noodle.

Lee started this small business in 2005. He sweated, built it from nothing, worked his butt off and kept the creative juices flowing. Now, 17 years later he has an established business, he is expanding and he is creating franchise opportunities. You get the impression talking to Lee, that he has achieved all this through sheer force of will. His warm disposition and his determination are contagious. I leave the restaurant after finishing my Wok Fried Fish, feeling revitalised in body and spirit.

Branch Out in Uptown Spring Festival

Christmas Block of Line December 2022 to January 2023

Track base compaction to prepare for track building activities.

To progress work that needs to take place near the rail corridor, the Link Alliance will be undertaking Blocks of Line (BOL) at the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station site, throughout December this year and January. This work will help us to to maintain the momentum of the CRL project and deliver key infrastructure located near to the train line, safely while trains are not running.

Although passenger trains will not be running on the rail network during this time, there will be freight trains running so the public should continue to watch for trains and take care at level crossings.

This year, the BOL, will include a period over the Christmas holidays from the 26th December until 16th January, including some weekends prior to Christmas (3rd-4th December and 16th-17th December), and also the Auckland Anniversary holiday in January (28th-30th January).

The work includes track building and installation of overhead lines for the new train lines that will run along the Western Line, and the existing tracks into the CRL tunnels. It will also include essential work to lift materials over the live tracks such as the installation of the new Fenton Street Bridge.

Jargon Buster: Derailer

A derailer is equipment that can be temporarily affixed to existing rail track to prevent uncontrolled movements of rail vehicles. Derailers are used in the CRL tunnels to stop any vehicles moving forward into working areas, to protect workers.

In the diagram below, when the wheel of any vehicle meets the derailer, the wheel tread will ride up the wheel lifting ramp. Once the wheel reaches the deflector plate, it will deflect the wheel to the left and cause both leading wheels to derail to the left of the track.

Derailers must have an adjacent red reflectorised disk to provide warning to approaching rail vehicle operators.

Heritage Festival Hikoi

This month in partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Link Alliance co-led a historical hikoi as part of the annual Auckland Heritage Festival. Guided by Robbie Paora and our own Piet Ubels, the group journeyed through history. Commencing with an exploration of Te Ipu-a-Matāoho (the bowl of Matāoho), and then down the slopes of Maungawhau to discover the future around the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station project.

The moment the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through at Te Waihorotiu (Aotea) Station

Kia ora,

It has been a busy month for Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station, as the team welcome spring and the changes that this new season brings. With longer daylight hours and warmer weather, the team are springing into gear to prepare for a busy end to the year.

In our news this month, the Dame Whina Cooper Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) successfully reached its final destination, breaking through at Te Waihorotiu (Aotea) Station on 14th September to big cheers, marking the end of an incredible underground journey.

Across the station, there continues to be a buzz of activity. Take a ride with us along the North Auckland Line and discover new developments happening on site.

In breaking community news, local businesses had a stellar day on Saturday with people from all over Tāmaki Makaurau coming to the Uptown Branch Out spring festival.

Haere ra, Dame Whina Cooper TBM

Dame Whina Cooper TBM breaking through to Te Waihorotiu (Aotea) Station on Wednesday, 14th September

Big news! This month our Dame Whina Cooper TBM successfully reached its final destination and broke through to Te Waihorotiu Station. This is a significant milestone for the project, and it reflects the hard mahi from our team of 2,000.

The mighty machine has now completed boring the two City Rail Link (CRL) tunnels, and since the launch in May 2021, has travelled over 3.2 kilometres, installed 2,103 segment rings, and removed over 260,000 tonnes of spoil.

Now that the TBM has completed its journey, the cutterhead has been removed and lifted above ground from Te Waihorotiu Station. Functional and valuable parts of the TBM including the main drive motor and refuge chamber will be returned to the manufacturer in Germany for refurbishment and use on future TBM’s.

The rest of the 130-metre-long machine, including the gantries and conveyor belt, will be pulled back through the completed tunnel to Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station to be dismantled.

With the disassembly of the TBM, crews will also begin to pack down and remove equipment on site that has supported the TBM drive. You can read more about this activity in our recent notification HERE.

Our crews will remain working on the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station site 24 hours, 7 days a week to support the TBM disassembly and pack down of supporting activity and equipment. The size of the team will reduce significantly from mid-November.

Mined tunnelling operations will continue 24 hours, 5 days per week until mid 2023 as crews complete the tunnel lining works.

Across the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station site there continues to be a hive of activity.

Eastbound from Porters Avenue

Porters Avenue Bridge construction continues, with side panel installation underway for the lifts and stairs. Keep an eye out as streetscaping and landscaping around Porters Avenue and Fenton Street are set to begin next month.

Next stop – Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station

The Station building is becoming visible with two large concrete base slabs now poured for the front and back of house areas. The ‘front of house’ will be publicly accessible while the ‘back of house’ will house plant and technical rooms.

The structural steel for the back of house is now in place and precast concrete panels are being installed.

All aboard to Boston Road

The watermain pipe running over the Temporary Services Bridge has been successfully relocated to the Normanby Road Bridge which will open to vehicles at the end of November.

One way traffic along Boston Road East has switched sides, so the team can begin regrading the road to tie in with the new roundabout level. While the regrading is underway, the team will also be constructing the pavement, kerb and channel, as well as landscaping the area in preparation for tree pit installation in early 2023.

Coming in hot! We have a sneak peak of the lava-coloured, cast glass triangles that will feature on the Station building entrance at Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station.

Artist Tessa Harris and Glass Artist Sofia Athineou have been putting in the mahi to design and create 53 glass triangles that are organised to represent a map of the 53 volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau. Referencing the atua (deity) Mataoho, the creator of the basalt volcanic field.

The glass triangles are made out of Gaffer Glass and are a combination of 5 different shades that range from light yellow to dark red, depicting the tones of lava. Each triangle has a length of 17.5 cm and width of 4 cm, weighing a total of 2 kg.

Sofia Athineou experimented with different materials to achieve the perfect triangular shape. The coloured Gaffer Glass is then placed on the inside of the moulds and above them in flowerpots, ready to start the firing process which lasts just over 4 days.

Within the first 24 hours the kiln reaches its top temperature, and the different coloured glass pieces melt like thick honey into each other. The glass that is placed above melts through the hole of the flowerpot and creates the beautiful top shiny surface of each glass.

The glass triangles will remain safe in their crates until they are ready to be installed into their final position in the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station building.

Branch Out in Uptown

On the first mostly sunny Saturday in Spring, the Uptown Business Association and Link Alliance partnered to bring the people of Tāmaki Makaurau, including quite a few fur babies, to Uptown. The streets of Normanby and Enfield were humming with music and dance, the delicious aromas of free samples from the plethora of food places, tantalising both human and canine senses.

Hundreds were in the mood for play, flying through the streets and local businesses to locate all 10 birds to win prizes. The dedication was impressive, both in the number who found all ten, and also with those who waited in lines to have their dogs teased and cajoled into the cutest doggy portraits.

Local businesses in the Normanby/Enfield area went all-out on the day to provide games, activities, entertainment, music and demonstrations to the hundreds who flocked the streets making this local event a hit.

Spring showers made the day’s theme perfect and didn’t dissuade artists or flowers from the streets.

The Branch Out event is the second big event that Link Alliance has partnered with the Uptown Business Association to deliver following on from the success of Aroha in Uptown in 2021. With the pandemic now a thing of the past, the Uptown community can look forward to more good times with these two partners determined to support the heart of this great community.

A 'rubbish' day out

Back in August, Link Alliance ventured onto the railway tracks with St Peter’s College and KiwiRail for a clean-up activation. We utilised a Block of Line period where no trains run on the rail network to allow for track maintenance and construction to take place.

This was a rare and exciting opportunity for a small group of students at St Peter’s College to hop on the tracks and learn more about the sustainability targets and initiatives on New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project.

What does this mean for the Link Alliance project?

Since 2019 we have diverted 97% of construction and demolition waste from landfill and have reused 12%. It is important for the Link Alliance project to raise awareness about sustainability and responsible disposal of waste, as our rangatahi (youth) of today will be our leaders tomorrow.

Quarterly stakeholder survey

A big thanks to those who participated in this month’s quarterly stakeholder survey and for one prize draw entry, $100 dollars worth of thanks! Here is a snippet of what our stakeholders told us this month, and what we are going to do about it.

Great communications feedback, with compliments about our people, our engagement and our stories made us glad again this month. We’re going to continue to do our best to provide our community with outstanding service.

Nonetheless there is some feedback that suggests a degree of information overload, that we may be repeating information in our communications unnecessarily. As a team we are regularly sending out reminder notifications. In response to this feedback, we’ll review how often that happens and ensure that we do this only when it will be meaningful for our neighbours.

A mostly neutral response to the construction QR code, coupled with advice that road closure dates have been available only through signage, suggests that we can do more to share the QR code. The QR code is valuable for providing current information about work outside of hours and significant impacts, like road closures. In response to this feedback, we’ll share QR code fridge magnets in our upcoming Christmas Block of Line packs and provide instructions for how to use the code.

A survey participant felt that their concerns are not taken seriously and some other of the communications feedback expresses frustration with ongoing works. We will provide more feedback so that people know that their views have been considered. We will do this by following up on every query with the reason for outcomes.

While the majority of participants feel that they are receiving the information they need to be able to plan ahead, a small number do not. To address this feedback, we will continue to share our channels widely, we encourage anyone reading this who is not receiving communication to sign up for our notifications. Unfortunately, we cannot send work notifications to people unless they opt in. Please do opt in!

Quiet Space

In previous surveys and conversations with our team, neighbours identified the need for somewhere quiet to go away from construction work. In response to that feedback, in August 2021 we partnered with our wonderful neighbours at Cityside Baptist Church to provide a space for four hours a day, four days a week. As the construction programme has changed and particular construction activities such as piling have wrapped up, the relevance of the space is reduced. It is time for us to look at other ways to support our neighbours. Watch this space for new initiatives!

The Link Alliance Quiet Space at Cityside Baptist Church will not be available from 27 October 2022. In the meantime, do come along and chill, work or study in the warm quiet at the church.

Upcoming Block of Line over October Labour weekend

Track building activities over a Block of Line

To continue progressing work that needs to take place near the rail corridor, a Block of Line (BOL) will take place from 11pm Friday 21st October until Monday 25th October at 4am.

A ‘Block of Line’ is where limited or no trains are running on the rail network and Link Alliance will undertake necessary work in the rail corridor or immediately adjacent to the tracks. Although no passenger trains will be running on the rail network during this time, there will still be some freight trains running. The public are advised to continue to look for trains, and take care at level crossings.

Link Alliance teams will be busy across the Auckland rail network throughout the long weekend and overnight. The Link Alliance work will include track building, construction of overhead lines, retaining wall construction, safety screen installations and hoarding removals. As some of the construction activities will take place immediately adjacent or on the track, it is safest for our teams to do this while trains are not running.

There may be noise and light activity along the length of the rail track over both days and nights during the weekend. As always, our environmental advisors will be ensuring that we work to best practice and regularly monitor construction activities.

InfoHub and Site tours

Basalt pavers at the CRL Visitor Centre- Te Manawa

On Tuesday 4th October from 5-7pm, we welcome you to join us at 1 New North Road in the City Rail Link Visitor Centre at Te Manawa.

Following this month’s InfoHub success and due to popular demand, we are excited to present again, an exhibit that will showcase the street designs around Porters Avenue and Fenton Street as well as design features of the new station. We will be displaying special samples of basalt rock which was excavated during construction, to show how this material will be used to make pavers for the street.

There will also be an exclusive documentary screening to show the process of how these incredible pavers are manufactured in New Zealand, using basalt rock excavated from the earth around the Link Alliance site. Our Design Manager will be at the exhibit to answer any questions you may have. 
Come along to feel how heavy the basalt pavers are, or jump into our Virtual Reality for a look around the future station.

Perimeter Walks

If walking is your thing, our monthly perimeter tours around the Maungawhau/Mount Eden station site have been a huge hit!

Tours take place every month on the first Tuesday from 4.30pm, and due to demand, we are also running tours on the last Saturday of the month from 10am.

Heritage Walks in October

This month we also have two special tours of the neighbourhood happening as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival. Each tour will capture the journey of the Maungawhau area through time, including the train station, mana whenua stories, the natural environment, and commercial, religious and political histories. Tours will occur on 9th and 16th of October between 1-4pm starting from atop Maungawhau.

In our news this month, the team at Maungawhau/Mount Eden are disassembling the final gantry of the Dame Whina Cooper Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Once disassembled and loaded onto containers, it will ship to the port where it will make its final trip back to Germany. </p>

Moving westbound to the Western Line platform, the systems team has taken over the second completed line for track building. A little further along in the west, preparations are underway for the Porters Avenue Bridge lift installations, along with ongoing landscape and street works on Porters Avenue and Fenton Street. </p>

Since the TBM’s breakthrough at Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) in September, it has continued to be a busy month for our teams working in the City Rail Link (CRL) and the Eastern Link tunnels.

Key pieces of the TBM are already on route back to the manufacturers in Germany, where they will be reused to build new machines.  </p>

Within the station concourse is the waterwall, a large carved basalt art piece representing volcanic flows that formed Maungawhau.   </p>

This is expressed through the four architectural linewide elements; earth element representing Papa-tu-a-nuku, mother earth, sky element representing Rangi-nui, father sky, threshold element representing each station’s deity, and fourth element representing Te Whai-ahhh, the glimmer of dawn. The first of the urban realm work has begun at Maungawhau/Mount Eden. Fenton Street and Porters Avenue are moving into the next exciting phase of construction – streetscapes. Streetscaping is one of the final aspects of the construction in the Fenton/Porters area, this urban realm work will result in the finished streets the public will be walking on to get to the station.

The road surface in Fenton Street and the rock garden features, use basalt boulders and basalt pavers that are made from the excavated basalt rock, taken from the construction site, only meters away from where they will be used in the permanent street works.  See more about this awesome and sustainable initiative in the video below- </p>

The street work will be done first and landscaping, such as the planting of trees and creation of the rock garden, will come at a later date as one of the last tasks before opening the new station. </p>

It is a tapu place where Matāoho came to rest and engage in ceremony. </p>

This narrative provides an overarching link to the Normanby Road Bridge that looks at the change of state of the lava flow of Matāoho to form basalt, a fine-grained, dark charcoal-black stone that occurs when hot lava flow meets the earth’s surface or a mid-ocean ridge and is cooled. </p>

It was a pleasure to share progress with the Uptown Business Association Committee. From the time St Peter’s College (SPC) opened in 1939, many students came from the western suburbs of Auckland, using the train service to attend school. Until 1964, the nearest platform was Mount Eden station, a ten-minute walk to the school. At this time, about 250 SPC students were using the train and walking between Mount Eden station and the school.  

<p paraeid="{226c1bfb-5413-4423-80e0-2089929dc16f}{26}" paraid="340467692" style="margin: 10px 0;padding: 0;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #202020;font-family: 'Lato', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 16px;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">A teacher from SPC, Brother T. A. Monagle, approached the New Zealand Railways Department to request a train station outside the school. The college had several reasons for asking for a station, including vehicle traffic which had increased in the area, and to prevent accidents when the students were boarding the train. The Minister of Railways at the time, Mr John McAlpine, came to see for himself and walked to Mount Eden station from the school. The visit was a success! </p>

<p paraeid="{226c1bfb-5413-4423-80e0-2089929dc16f}{32}" paraid="1343300103" style="margin: 10px 0;padding: 0;mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;color: #202020;font-family: 'Lato', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 16px;line-height: 150%;text-align: left;">Boston Road railway station was built near SPC on the Western Line of the Auckland rail network, beneath the State Highway 1 overbridge. The first train stopped at this new station at 8.30am on Tuesday 15 September 1964. <br>

The station closed on 10 April 2010, the day after the opening of the new Grafton Station, built to better serve a more central area including the hospital and local university. Thanks to Brother T. A. Monagle, SPC students continue to have direct access to the train station for their daily commute.  <br>

To progress work that needs to take place near the rail corridor, the Link Alliance will be undertaking Blocks of Line (BOL) at the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station site, throughout December this year and January. This work will help us to to maintain the momentum of the CRL project and deliver key infrastructure located near to the train line, safely while trains are not running.

A derailer is equipment that can be temporarily affixed to existing rail track to prevent uncontrolled movements of rail vehicles. Derailers are used in the CRL tunnels to stop any vehicles moving forward into working areas, to protect workers.

Once the wheel reaches the deflector plate, it will deflect the wheel to the left and cause both leading wheels to derail to the left of the track.  </p>

This month in partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Link Alliance co-led a historical hikoi as part of the annual Auckland Heritage Festival. Guided by Robbie Paora and our own Piet Ubels, the group journeyed through history. Commencing with an exploration of Te Ipu-a-Matāoho (the bowl of Matāoho), and then down the slopes of Maungawhau to discover the future around the Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station project.
