Karangahape: Station Walls Complete

All station walls for Karangahape Station’s two entrances have now been poured.

The concrete panels, called diaphragm or D-walls, are constructed in the ground to form continuous structures.

The 26 D-wall panels at the Mercury Lane station entrance range in depth from 15 to 31 metres and a total of 2700 cubic metres of concrete was poured to create the station box (pictured below).

The depth of the 30 D-walls at the Beresford Square station entrance range from 22 to 40 metres, with 1200 cubic metres of concrete used in total.

Now that the walls have been built, we’ll say goodbye to the big red silos of the bentonite plant and make way for the next stage of works – the construction of the station’s floors and excavation of the rock beneath.

This stage of works, will take approximately two years and includes the pouring of the station ‘lid’ (ground floor slab), crane movements on the slab and multiple truck movements to deliver concrete and remove soil.

At 32 metres below ground level, Karangahape will be the country’s deepest station.
