What's in Store for 2022

Happy New Year from the team at City Rail Link! We’re back and ready for another exciting and busy year as we build Tāmaki Makaurau a world-class rail system.

Last year ended with the project’s biggest milestone yet, on 22 December the Dame Whina Cooper tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through into Aotea Station – marking the completion of the first of two tunnel drives.

This year we are going to do it all again, with the TBM due to be relaunched in April to bore the second CRL tunnel. The TBM team have been working day and night throughout this month to dismantle, lift and transport the TBM’s front shield from Aotea Station back to the Mt Eden site.

You can also expect to see the following milestones this year:

Mt Eden Station

  • Completion of the ventilation building that will provide fresh air in the CRL tunnels

  • Completion of the Basque Park utility upgrade in the third quarter of 2022

  • Completion of Porters Ave pedestrian bridge by the end of 2022

  • Construction and completion of the Normanby Road road-over-rail bridge

  • Beginning of streetscape works and tree planting on Boston Road

Karangahape Station

  • Completion of excavation for the station boxes and mined tunnels

  • The Beresford Square station box will be connected to the mined tunnels beneath the deepest point on the project – almost 35 metres below ground

  • The second and final breakthrough into the station as the TBM makes the final drive to the Aotea Station

  • Construction of the above ground station building at Mercury Lane will begin around mid-2022

  • Construction of the above ground station box in Beresford Square will begin towards the end of the year

Aotea Station

  • Construction of the underground train platform level will begin

  • The bluestone wall will start to reappear on Albert Street

  • Streetscape upgrades to commence towards the end of the year

  • Station entrances will begin to appear on Victoria Street

  • Excavation of all spoil will be completed this year

  • Final TBM breakthrough into Aotea Station, marking the end of the second drive

Britomart Station

  • Beam strengthening work

  • New rooms in the CPO basement for driver accommodation, equipment and control centres

  • Platform and track reconfiguration to enable CRL trains to drive straight into the tunnels

  • Moving underground walls to allow for this track reconfiguration
