Free Bus Replaces Train During Mt Eden Station Closure

From 11 July, Mt Eden Station will be closing for about four years. This is to enable the construction of the new Mt Eden Station and City Rail Link connections to the Western Line.

The public transport route will be replaced with the new, free bus service - which will provide a frequent way for those in Mt Eden to get to Kingsland and Newmarket.

While this change will be an inconvenience for many, closing the station is the only way to guarantee both public and worker’s safety during construction.

The current access points to the station – the ramp to and from Mt Eden Road and the pedestrian level crossing between Fenton and Ngahura Streets - will close permanently.

During the weekends of 11-12 and 17-19 July, when the trains are not running on the network, Auckland Transport (AT) will begin the process of removing operational equipment such as power and signalling cables, and later all of their fittings, such as canopies, lighting and seating, from the station’s platform.

To perform these works, an AT-led team will be accessing the platform via our construction site and using a crane to remove their assets from the platform.

The remnants of the ramp and platform will be dismantled by the Link Alliance later this year.

Alternative travel options

Once the station is closed, commuters and pedestrians will need to use an alternative route if they catch the train to or from Mt Eden Station, or use it as a walking connection.

A new frequent 64 bus service starts on July 5, ahead of the closure. This 64 bus service will be free during CRL construction.

Those who normally catch the train to Mt Eden and then bus into the city centre, can also do this from nearby stations Grafton and Kingsland. Western Line trains will run as usual, but they won’t stop at Mt Eden.
