Customs Street Intersection Gets CRL Makeover

Drivers and pedestrians need to plan for changes as one of central Auckland’s busiest intersections gets an extensive makeover for the CRL project.

Work upgrading the Customs Street West/Albert Street intersection started June 29 and will continue for two months. Access for drivers and pedestrians will be maintained, but there will be temporary changes to the layout of the road and footpaths.

When finished, the intersection will have a new roadway and footpaths.

A section of the two CRL tunnels have been built under the intersection, and the upgrade is part of wider CRL improvements underway along the lower end of Albert Street.

Work around the intersection includes breaking concrete and asphalt, removing the road and footpaths, connecting utilities, building new kerbs and channels, reconstructing the road, concreting, installing pavers and painting line markings on the upgraded road.

Traffic management plans will ensure people can continue to use the intersection safely. Traffic lanes will be reduced to one lane in some places during off-peak hours - 8.30am to 3pm - and on Saturdays and Sundays. Pedestrian diversions will be required around the work areas.

Noise mats will be used where required to reduce noise levels.
