CRL Talks Rubbish for Recycling Week

Construction and demolition waste in Auckland makes up about half of all waste to landfill, and as New Zealand’s biggest ever transport infrastructure project we have a massive opportunity to do good.

CRL has an aspirational goal of zero waste to landfill – and so far we’ve diverted around 98 per cent of our waste. We have achieved this by avoiding waste, finding opportunities for reusing materials wherever possible, focusing on deconstruction rather than demolition, recycling and reducing office waste.

This past Recycling Week, between 19-25 October, CRL encouraged everyone who works on the project to continue playing their part in reducing waste in our offices and lunchrooms.

We created an animated character, Michael Recycle, based on our own Michael Backhurst who works in the sustainability team, to help guide people on where to dispose unwanted items. We also gave demonstrations to site workers and held a very competitive recycling game in the office.

Liz Root, Sustainability Manager for City Rail Link Limited, speaks on how the project’s doing so far in reaching our waste targets in the above video.
