New CRL Contracts Signed

Two of the last few remaining CRL contracts were confirmed earlier this month.

Known as C5 and C7, the contracts have been awarded to the Link Alliance. They sit within the project’s existing budget of $4.4 billion. The Link Alliance is also delivering CRL’s C3 – the scope of works delivering the main set of tunnels and stations.

Contract 5 primarily involves the physical works of connecting the new CRL line with the North Auckland or Western Line at Mt Eden. About 1km of heavy works are needed to create a spaghetti-junction-like track alignment as the CRL line splits into two branches, eastbound and westbound, at the junction. This includes the creation of retaining walls, changes in vertical track alignment, as well as the establishment of cross-over structures and road and pedestrian bridges at a number of level crossings.

Contract 7 covers the rail systems that will go inside the tunnel. These include the track, overhead line, signalling, control systems, communications systems, control room fit-out and building work, and trackside auxiliaries. This will make sure trains can run on the new line once open – and mesh successfully into the current rail network.
