Neighbourhood Changes At Mt Eden

Basque Park is located in Eden Terrace

Basque Park is located in Eden Terrace

There are some significant neighbourhood changes around our Mt Eden site.

The Normanby Road level crossing in Grafton closes to all traffic on June 2. Pedestrians can continue to use the crossing until mid-July when a temporary bridge over the Western Line opens for them.

The crossing will be replaced with a road-over-rail bridge that will be much safer for drivers and people on foot. The railway will run in a trench under the new bridge.

The crossing is located in a busy work area where City Rail Link (CRL) tracks join the Western Line.  The new bridge is planned to open next year.

And in nearby Eden Terrace, work is about to start in Basque Park on a small but essential pipe diversion. Bringing the new railway tracks into the station will displace some pipework and this needs to be redirected and joined at a nearby interconnection within the park.

The site will be located in the 'amphitheatre' area of the park, by the Couldry Street and Rendall Place entrances, as shown in the map below.

Key facts:

  • The site will occupy approximately one quarter of the park's total footprint

  • The works will take a maximum of 12 months, starting in October 2021 at the earliest

  • The park will be returned to its original state when the work is over

  • During these temporary works Basque Park will still be available to all users

  • The site will be safely secured inside construction hoardings

  • Standard working hours will be 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday

Upgrading this section of the CRL network by diverting the pipe through Basque park will reduce the risk of flooding and sewage overflows, as well as allowing wastewater to be properly treated.

You can find more information about this work on the CRL website at cityraillink.co.nz/basquepark.
