Mt Eden Station closure
On 30 May - Queen’s Birthday weekend - the existing Mt Eden Station will close for about four years while construction of the new station and twin rail tunnels takes place. If you get the train from, get off at or walk through Mt Eden Station, you will need to rethink your journey.
When it re-opens in 2024, the new world-class station building will provide access to both the Western Line and the new CRL Line, which will run between Mt Eden and Britomart via two new underground stations at Karangahape Road and Albert Street.
Why the station needs to close
Our priority is ensuring the safety of the public and our workers. We need to close Mt Eden Station until 2024 because it’ll be a live construction site while we are building – if it was kept open, we couldn’t guarantee everyone’s safety.
The existing Western Line platform, access ramp from Mt Eden Road and crossing points between Ngahura and Fenton streets will all be demolished to make way for the new, transformed station. We will build an extended Western Line platform to provide for longer nine-car trains, as well as the new platform for the CRL line. The Ngahura to Fenton crossing will be replaced with a safer pedestrian and cycle overbridge.
While construction is taking place, trains will move through the site on a single line and they’ll also need to slow down in Mt Eden for safety reasons but will not stop. This means that the Western Line can continue to run on time and the same number of trains will be able to operate on the network.
Prioritising public transport
We know the closure will be an inconvenience for many rail users and those who use the Mt Eden Station. We are working closely with Auckland Transport to ensure there are alternative options available during the closure.
If you get the train from, or get off at Mt Eden Station consider using Kingsland or Grafton Stations, which are a five to 10 minute walk from Mt Eden, or one of the many bus options in the area.
Auckland Transport will also offer a new bus route - the 640 - to provide a direct route between Mt Eden and Newmarket. The 640 route will run from 3 May 2020, ahead of the Mt Eden Station closure. Buses will travel between Valley Road and Newmarket, via Mt Eden Road, Boston Road and Khyber Pass Road. You can see this in the map above.
If you get the train from, or get off at any station other than Mt Eden, your journey will remain the same.
