Leading award for CRL works
City Rail Link broke out the bubbly (sparking water, that is) this month to celebrate receiving the highest possible rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) for its leading work on an early package of works at Waitematā Station (Britomart) known as contract one or C1.
The leading (or ‘Leading As Built’) achievement follows the ‘Excellent As Built’ and ‘Leading Design’ ratings awarded last year for the contract of CRL works at the lower end of Albert St.
C1 works involved the construction of twin 136m-long tunnels under the heritage-listed Chief Post Office and lower Queen St It also included the reinstatement of the surrounding urban realm, which is now known as Te Komititanga. The works were conducted by the Downer/Soletanche Bachy (DSB) joint venture, while design works were managed by Aurecon, Mott MacDonald, Grimshaw, Jasmax and Arup.
Over the project’s 100-year lifespan, measures taken to improve efficiency through design and construction will result in:
17.8% reduction in peak operational energy use
23% reduction in operational carbon emissions
58% reduction in operational water
In terms of the project’s aspirational goal of zero waste to landfill, 100% of spoil, 97% of construction and demolition waste and 74% of office waste was diverted from landfills.
CRL Chief Executive Dr Sean Sweeney said, “these are meaningful and tangible results that reflect our commitment to sustainable infrastructure construction and, given CRL’s 100-year lifespan, will benefit Aucklanders for generations to come.”
The certificate was officially presented to the C1 team on the afternoon of Wednesday 20 July by ISC Technical Director, Kerry Griffiths.
