Waitematā Station (Britomart) will be closed over Queen's Birthday weekend for the annual block of lines between 3 June – 6 June 2022.
City Rail Link and its contractors will make the most of this time when no trains are running to complete essential construction work in the station. This notification outlines the works happening at Britomart Place during this time.

Britomart Place Works
During the Queen’s Birthday weekend, our contractors Martinus will be busy doing a range of support works inside the tunnel.
Works will be undertaken between 6.30am and 6.30pm throughout the weekend.
Martinus and Link Alliance will be accessing the underground tunnels through the emergency access stairwell on Britomart Place (pictured below). A generator will be placed nearby and is expected to operate only when needed during daytime hours.
Two concrete deliveries are expected above ground on Britomart Place on Saturday 4 June, and will take approximately 2 hours each. The new concrete will be pumped from street level into the tunnels below from Britomart Place, through the emergency access stairwell in front of the Britomart Carpark.
There may be some noticeable noise from the concrete pump and generator when they operate. We do not anticipate any other noise or disruption from the underground works.
If the concrete works are not able to proceed on 4 June due to unforeseen circumstances, it will be postponed to another day during the long weekend.

Update - May 2022
Britomart Place weekend road closure
From 7am Saturday 14 May to 10pm Sunday 15 May, a temporary road closure will be installed on Britomart Place:
Britomart Place itself will be restricted to one lane only operating in the south-bound direction (heading towards Customs Street).
No left or right turn into Britomart Place from Customs Street will be possible (with the exception of residents only access through to Galway Street).
Access to and from Scene Lane will be largely unaffected.
At times, a stop/go may be in place to assist motorists through construction activities.
A detour will be in place around Tangihua Street and along Quay Street – as shown on the map below.
The road closure is required to remove the concrete pedestrian island in the middle of Britomart Place and to put in place a safe work area and road layout for the duration of the works through to early 2023.
Construction activities are only expected to take place during daytime hours – 7am -7pm.
Parts of this work will be noisy. A concrete cutter is required to help remove the concrete pedestrian island. New asphalt will be laid on Britomart Place and at the corner of Scene Lane to ensure a drivable surface. This will involve the use of equipment such as a compactor and small trucks.
We understand that this type of work is disruptive for neighbours and thank you for your patience in advance.
Britomart Place and Scene Lane works during May
City Rail Link works are now underway at Britomart Place and Scene Lane, carried out by both Martinus Rail and Link Alliance. The works involve tunnel roof strengthening works and the relocation of a structural wall within the rail tunnel.
There will be two work sites located in Britomart Place (also shown in the image below):
1. Main works area: Next to the Scene One apartment building, a five metre pit will be excavated to expose the tunnel roof.
2. Secondary works area: Located through the existing emergency exit portal outside the Britomart carpark building and used mainly for access into the tunnels.
Timing of works
Works will occur from May 2022 through to early 2023.
During May you can expect the following:
Early May: The site areas will begin to establish on Britomart Place in two areas – immediately next to the Scene One building and surrounding the emergency access stairwell. Hoardings will be erected around the sites for safety.
Week of 9th May: The site will begin to establish, with hoarding and fencing starting to be set up. The project team will be located in the former Chinese Restaurant Site on the corner of Scene Lane. We have an open door policy and welcome you if you would like to meet with us for a more detailed chat.
Tuesday 10 May: Overnight concrete work is planned at the access portal (as per notification that went out yesterday).
Weekend of 14-15 May: A road closure is planned (as described above) to narrow the road layout to allow sufficient space for the work site.
Mid-Late May: The team will continue to prepare for the main above ground works, with surveying, site setup and proofing underway. A hydrovac truck will be operating from 16 May to expose underground services such as power, gas and water. A hydrovac has a loud but constant sound and is a safe way to locate services without risk of damaging them.
May 2022 – February 2023: Works will be undertaken within the two above ground work areas as well as inside the tunnels under ground. Further information about these will be shared monthly, with specific notices when required.
What you can expect
Hours
The team will work mainly during weekdays, with very little weekend or overnight work planned above ground.
Work will continue underground, with overnight work occurring regularly as the team work when the rail line is closed.
Some weekend works will occur during the rail network Block of Lines – both above and below ground.
Access
With the exception of a few odd weekend closures (including 14-15 May described above), traffic movements within Britomart Place and Scene Lane will operate as normal and access to driveways and entrances will be largely unaffected.
Pedestrians will need to take a short detour around the work site when accessing between Britomart Place and Scene lane, with a crossing point located close to Tyler Street.
Effects
There will be general construction disruption such as deliveries, concrete truck movements and minor vibration. There will be some periodic noise from the works during certain construction activities. The more noisy works are expected when:
the team excavate the access hole (approximately one week duration)
when drilling occurs into the tunnel roof inside the access hole (sporadically throughout works)
when the hole is back filled (late 2022).
We will be monitoring noise and vibration using specialist monitoring equipment located around the work sites to ensure we stay within the accepted international standards.
Possible impacts Mitigations
Noisy equipment use such as drilling and concrete breaking. For above ground works, these activities will only occur during the day. Hoardings will be used where possible.
Vehicle movements will managed by the site team into and out of the two work areas.
Team behaviour: Daily prestart meetings and centralised team area utilised to share onsite behaviour expectations.
Parking: Seven carparks are leased outside Scene One for standard vehicles. Construction vehicles to access the two work areas on Britomart Place.
Night work: Some below ground works require concrete pumps and trucking at surface level at night. Night work above ground will only occur when no day time option is available.
Pedestrian and cyclist access: Access for pedestrians and cyclists around the two work areas will be clearly signposted using the pink wayfinding signage.

Above ground works 10 May 2022
The below notification is to inform you of minor above ground works happening at Britomart Place on Tuesday 10 May 2022 (between midnight-2am).
Our contractors, Martinus Rail, will be undertaking concrete works within the Britomart Station rail tunnel. The new concrete needs to be pumped from street level into the tunnels below from Britomart Place, through the emergency access stairwell in front of the Britomart Carpark. This stairwell is located inside the glass artwork enclosure featured in the picture above.
Unfortunately, as these works will occur within one metre of the live railway line, they must be completed at night when trains are not running.
Two concrete trucks are planned to arrive between midnight and 2am and will park on Britomart Place. Concrete will be pumped from the trucks, down through the access stairwell and into the tunnels.
There may be some noticeable noise from the pump as it operates. We do not anticipate any other noise or disruption from the underground works.
If the works are not able to proceed on 10 May due to unforeseen circumstances, they will be postponed to a night later that week.

Britomart Place and Scene Lane works
City Rail Link works are getting underway again at Britomart Place and Scene Lane, carried out by both Martinus Rail and Link Alliance - planned from late April 2022 to early 2023. The works involve tunnel roof strengthening works and the relocation of a structural wall within the rail tunnel.

Britomart Place Works
During this Easter block of lines, our contractors' Martinus and Link Alliance will be accessing the underground tunnels through the emergency access stairwell on Britomart Place (pictured below). A generator will be also placed nearby to enable essential works below - this generator is expected to operate only when needed during daytime hours (7am-7pm) over the long weekend.

KiwiRail will also take the opportunity of lower patronage over the Easter long weekend to continue important network upgrades across the wider Auckland network.

This is gas works and is unrelated to the City Rail Link project. Notification - March 2022
The below notification relates to CRL works currently underway at Britomart Station and Tyler Street, carried out by Link Alliance.
While most of these works will continue underground in the station itself, some activity will be noticed above ground in late April/early May - such as additional truck deliveries.
To help you get a better understanding of what these works mean for you, you can expect to hear from Michelle Parish, Link Alliance Senior Communications and Engagement Specialist.
Michelle will be reaching out to neighbours in the area to ensure that people are aware of what is going on. Link Alliance is constructing the main contract of stations and tunnels for CRL and it is very important to the team that they work closely with neighbours throughout the construction process.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, the recently notified disruption to pedestrian movements overnight concerning a section of Britomart Place has now been changed slightly to include its back up dates as well.

Please note, as part of these works pedestrian movement on Britomart Place will alter slightly. Traffic Controllers will be on hand to assist and full access on Britomart Place remains. Vehicle movement is not impacted on Britomart Place. Cars will be able to turn on to Britomart Place and Britomart Place will remain a two way street.
If, for any reason, this work cannot be done on the date stated you will be advised and the work will be done on Thursday 3 February 10:30pm – Friday 5 February 5am.

Upcoming works planned during the Christmas Block of Lines
KiwiRail and its contractors are continuing planned track works at Britomart Station and the surrounding Quay Park area. The work will deliver essential changes to allow for future construction of the City Rail Link.
The work in this area forms part of KiwiRail’s annual temporary network closure over the Christmas holidays to allow uninterrupted work to complete key projects. As these works can only happen when no trains are running, they are planned during the annual shutdown period of late December to January 2022. This is the quietest time of the year for rail commuters. During this time rail services will be replaced by buses.

Britomart Place/Scene Lane works from 23 Dec 2021 - late Jan 2022
To enable works during KiwiRail’s Christmas block of line a new, purpose-built site compound is being established to replace the previous Link Alliance compound. This will contain site offices that will be used 24/7 by their teams. Teams are aware that it is a residential area and will minimise the disruption to neighbours where possible and will use other access points wherever they can. The site will be powered by a low noise generator that will be placed at the Customs Street side of the compound.
Throughout the construction period teams will continue to use the glass intervention staircase to access the station by foot, and at times they will need to use this access point to pump concrete. A traffic management system will be in place over this time to ensure construction can be undertaken safely. This requires a reduction in traffic lanes for the duration of the block of line, and at times a short-term daytime closure of the Britomart Place between the intersections of Customs Street East and Scene Lane. Please see below for a summary of works and key dates.
Key activities and dates:
Site compound set up: 23 December – 24 December, daytime only
Concrete pumping: 7 – 15 January 24/7, from 6am – 8pm

Upcoming Works From Now Until February 2022
First of all, please note that on Thursday 16 December from 1am - 6am there will be no left turn from Galway Street on to Commerce Street - because the fence line behind the Chief Post Office will be temporarily extended in order to remove a container from the site behind the Chief Post Office. Vehicles will still be able to turn either left or right from Commerce Street on to Galway Street. Traffic controllers will be on hand to ensure any pedestrians and vehicles are safe, the area will be clearly signed and noise will be kept to a minimum.
This precedes a larger group of works to be completed by KiwiRail and its contractors, who are continuing planned track works at Britomart Station and the surrounding Quay Park area. The work will deliver essential changes to allow for future construction of the City Rail Link. KiwiRail’s construction teams and contractors will be busy working as follows in these areas from Boxing day until late January:
Britomart Station – foot access and below ground works
Britomart Place/Scene Lane/Customs Street East – traffic management, foot access concrete trucks pumping and site compound
Quay Park area – traffic management, access and material storage
Auckland Yard, off Tamaki Drive – traffic management, access, work site and material storage

Works are nearly complete to ready The Strand Station for use by Eastern Line passengers during the last week of the annual rail network shutdown. KiwiRail will do some night works on 14 December in the train stabling yard. We apologise for any disruption this may cause and our teams will get it done as quickly and quietly as possible.
Please take extra care when travelling around the area as there will be an increase in construction traffic during the block of line works.

Notification 04 November 2021
For your information, access from Scene Lane to Britomart Place will be closed from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 November in order to complete necessary utilities relocation work. Utilities are currently being relocated in Britomart Place where strengthening and excavation work is needed underground for the construction of the City Rail Link.
Details on this temporary closure are below as well as information about KiwiRail work in the area.
Work on the corner of Britomart Place and Scene Lane
When
Saturday 6 - Sunday 7 November; and
Friday 12 - Sunday 14 November.
What
Scene Lane exit adjacent to Britomart Place will be closed to traffic.
It will be possible to enter and exit Scene Lane from Tangihua Street.
Why
Utilities underneath the road at the north end of Scene Lane need to be relocated.
Equipment used for work in this area will include:
Concrete saw
Hydrovac; and
5-8T excavator.
Impacts and mitigations
Local traffic
Britomart Place traffic will not be impacted.
Traffic controllers in place
Traffic Controllers will be located at Scene Lane to ensure people and vehicles can exit Scene Lane from Tangihua Street safely if needed.
At Britomart Place there will be a Traffic Controller on site to keep people and vehicles safe.
Fencing and noise mats
Fencing and noise mats will be around the work area to keep the site secure, and to help minimise noise.
Health and Safety
Full PPE will be worn and the team will adhere to strict Covid-19 heath and safety working requirements.
Reinstatement
Access to and from Scene Lane from Britomart Place will be restored from Monday 8 November - Thursday 11 November and from Monday 15 November onwards.
Hours of operation
Construction working hours for the Link Alliance remain from 7am - 7pm on Saturday, and on the Sunday.
The picture below shows where weekend work will occur in Scene Lane, and how access will be maintained.
KiwiRail work
KiwiRail and its contractors are continuing their works below ground in the Britomart platform and tunnel to prepare the area for the future City Rail Link.
At times the team is accessing the work area on foot via Britomart Station and also the intervention staircase at the corner of Scene Lane and Britomart Place.
Residents and businesses are likely to see more construction workers in the area around shift changes. This will mean a slight increase in traffic during work times.
KiwiRail and its contractors are mindful of being in a residential area and will keep their voices to a minimum while entering and leaving the access points.
The pedestrian access is being used over the following weekends:
Friday 5 - Sunday 7 November; and
Friday 19 - Sunday 21 November
Additionally, from 14 November, it will be used overnight each Sunday to Thursday for the foreseeable future.
Rail construction in the Britomart area is only possible when no trains are running. This means work occurs at various times including evenings, weekends, overnight and over holiday periods such as the annual rail network-wide Christmas/New Year shutdown.

City Rail Link Ltd (CRL Ltd) is pleased to announce the completion of City Rail Link’s (CRL) C1 contract at Britomart Station, after over 5 years of challenging and exceptional work.
We would like to thank everyone for their continuous support throughout the journey.
C1 was one of the earliest contracts for the project, that turned the once dead-end Britomart Station into a two-way through station with twin rail tunnels built under the historic Chief Post Office (CPO).
Work began in 2016 when the CPO, the main entrance to the Britomart Station, was closed. CRL Ltd and its contractors, Downer NZ and Soletanche Bachy JV, built the tunnels in the 109-year-old heritage-listed building, across the lower end of Queen Street and below Commercial Bay to connect with CRL tunnels in Albert Street.The contract also included the reinstatement of Britomart Station and upgrade of urban space and surrounding roads.
In April 2020, the project handed back to Auckland a fully restored CPO with the building resuming the “front door” for the Britomart Station. The once traffic congested Lower Queen Street in front of the CPO was transformed and reopened in December 2020, with a striking people-friendly square known as Te Komititanga. The layout of Te Komititanga’s basalt pavers were designed by Mana Whenua artists and weavers. A short video summary of our C1 works can be found at this link and photos are attached above.
While construction on C1 and the inside of the historic Chief Post Office may be complete, there is still a lot of work to be done in and around the station itself to prepare for when New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project – City Rail Link – opens in 2024. This is called the C9 contract and includes modifying existing train platforms, track infrastructure and supporting facilities. At street level this will be visible in Tyler and Galway Streets as well as Britomart Place. CPO façade renovation work, carried out by Auckland Transport is also ongoing.

Dear Britomart Station neighbours and stakeholders
Thank you for your continued support during works on Auckland’s busiest transport hub, Britomart Station.
Auckland is transforming into a world-class city and it is not without growing pains - but the work happening here and across the city will benefit us all in the future.
While construction on the inside of the historic Chief Post Office may be complete, there is still a lot of work to be done in and around the station itself to prepare for when New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project – City Rail Link – opens in 2024. This includes modifying existing train platforms, track infrastructure and supporting facilities.
These works will be carried out by a partnership consisting of City Rail Link Ltd, the Link Alliance, KiwiRail and Auckland Transport.
Main construction activities will re-start when Auckland returns to Alert Level 3 under strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols.
What does this mean for you?
We will do everything we can to minimize the impacts on Britomart Station neighbours and customers, however you might soon begin to notice more construction activity in and around the station from time to time. These effects will be carefully monitored and managed.
In addition to this, track work in the confined station environment is only possible when there are no trains running. This means the track work will be carried out during evenings, overnight and over holiday periods such as weekends and the annual network-wide Christmas/New Year shutdown.

Introductory email

As you may be aware, the Chief Post Office at 12 Queen Street, Auckland, has recently reopened as part of City Rail Link (CRL) works. This piece of work was completed by Downer Soletanche Bachy Joint Venture (DSBJV) and is a tremendous milestone.
The next step in bringing the CRL to life and making it a reality is to start work underground in the Britomart area to align the tracks and link the rail system.
This work will largely be done underground although there will be some surface works. Activity will run through to 2024.
Final works needed:
Removing a structural wall under Britomart Place after relocating utilities above.
Beam strengthening and constructing a replacement structural wall.
Modifying and improving existing track infrastructure.
Laying tracks.
Raising the west end of the Britomart platform and concourse.
Establishing equipment, control and driver accommodation rooms.
Setting up systems and completing testing and commissioning.
This work will be supported by activity in the Quay Park Yard site on Tamaki Drive near Mechanics Bay.

Why is this work needed?
These works are needed to allow for throughfare at Britomart Station and to increase train operations when the CRL is built. Work will interface with testing and commissioning that must be undertaken prior to the CRL opening in 2024.
When will work happen?
Usual operation hours are Monday to Saturday 8am-10pm. However, work will not be continuous. Often, work at Britomart and Quay Park Yard will be done as a 'block' during public holidays to help reduce the number of people directly impacted. You will be notified well in advance of any block of work, which is known as a 'block of line'.

Dear Britomart Station neighbours and stakeholders
Thank you for your continued support during works on Auckland’s busiest transport hub, Britomart Station.
Auckland is transforming into a world-class city and it is not without growing pains - but the work happening here and across the city will benefit us all in the future.
While construction on the inside of the historic Chief Post Office may be complete, there is still a lot of work to be done in and around the station itself to prepare for when New Zealand’s largest infrastructure project – City Rail Link – opens in 2024. This includes modifying existing train platforms, track infrastructure and supporting facilities.
These works will be carried out by a partnership consisting of City Rail Link Ltd, the Link Alliance, KiwiRail and Auckland Transport.
Main construction activities will re-start when Auckland returns to Alert Level 3 under strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols.
What does this mean for you?
We will do everything we can to minimise the impacts on Britomart Station neighbours and customers, however you might soon begin to notice more construction activity in and around the station from time to time. These effects will be carefully monitored and managed.
In addition to this, track work in the confined station environment is only possible when there are no trains running. This means the track work will be carried out during evenings, overnight and over holiday periods such as weekends and the annual network-wide Christmas/New Year shutdown.
